Our Mission
Empowering Website Owners
The llms.txt Checker was created with a clear mission: to help website owners and developers easily validate their llms.txt files against the standard specification. As Large Language Models (LLMs) become increasingly important in how users interact with web content, we believe that providing a structured way for these AI systems to understand website content is essential.
Promoting Web Standards
Our goal is to simplify the process of implementing the llms.txt standard, making it accessible to everyone from individual bloggers to large organizations. By providing a free, easy-to-use validation tool, we hope to contribute to the wider adoption of this emerging web standard and improve how AI systems interact with web content.
About the llms.txt Standard
Origins and Purpose
The llms.txt standard was proposed by Jeremy Howard in September 2024 as a solution to a critical limitation faced by Large Language Models: context windows are too small to handle most websites in their entirety, and converting complex HTML pages into LLM-friendly plain text is both difficult and imprecise.
Implementation Approach
The standard proposes adding a /llms.txt
markdown file to websites to provide LLM-friendly content. This file offers brief background information, guidance, and links to detailed markdown files. The llms.txt file follows a specific format that can be read by both humans and machines, making it an ideal bridge between website content and AI systems.
Key Components
Key components of an llms.txt file include:
- An H1 title with the name of the project or site (required)
- A blockquote with a short summary of the project
- Optional markdown sections with detailed information
- Optional H2-separated sections with file lists containing markdown hyperlinks
